PLANNING: Analysis Of 'Stay Awake'

The song we chose does not already have a music video so I wanted to analyse a different music videos of Example's.

I chose the song 'Stay Awake' because the video has influenced us in more ways then one. There are many base tracks including one with Example in front of a white wall, performing on his own. The wall has the letter 'e' standing for example, which is one of the ideas that we took from this video. The typography suggests that this music is informal and urban. This is because the font used is sans serif (meaning without serifs) which makes the letter look less grand and formal. The letter is also in lower case which enforces this.

There are three main dance scenes. The first in a forest where the mise en scene replicates a circus vibe with the costumes and props. This is my favorite part of the video as it creates a dream like vibe associated with taking drugs. The cityscape reflects the urban nature of the music and is what most of the audience are likely to identify with. Lastly, there is an empty warehouse which is a reference to raves.

The opening to the video introduces the scenes that run through the video. This sets up the audience so they know what to expect without being showed the whole thing. This is done by filming the locations in which the scenes take place or people standing passively without doing anything interesting. I like to think of this as the dancers and artists taking a break before the song gets into full swing.

The many cut away shots of people standing (xx) allow the audience to appreciate and familiarize themselves with the dancers and their way of dressing.

I managed to find a video where it is explained how the music video was created.
